Moving Forward: 5 Hopes For 2021

As we enter the end of 2020, I spent some time thinking about my life goals and my New Year’s resolution. This year wasn’t as smooth as I thought it would be. With the global pandemic going on, I realised I’ve taken so many things for granted. While there are things that I‘ve achieved despite being indoors such as making new friends and becoming an executive committee in an academic club, I still have some things in my bucket list I want to cross out and wishes I hope will come true. So join me as I lay out 5 hopes I have for 2021, and I would appreciate it if you can pray for these dreams of mine to realise, I’ll gladly do the same for you!

First and foremost, I’m sure this goes the same for everyone, I would like to see the end of COVID-19. Seeing how the vaccines are showing promise, I really hope the virus can be controlled, better yet just vanish, but we all know the latter is complicated. Frontliners have been working hard to help people, they risk themselves and give up spending time with their loved ones. I hope once everything gets better, these heroes can get a good rest and pay for their sacrifice. This also means I’ll finally be able to travel again as I dearly miss visiting other countries for the food, the weather, and the culture. It’s always fun to learn about the history of a heritage site, but thanks to YouTube, I visited places virtually. (PS: check this channel out! 2020 K-Culture Festival).

Moving on, it’s to finish my foundation studies with flying colours. When I first told my parents I want to study communications, they did not respond well. Well of course, I’m Asian, they wanted me to pursue something else,  but I managed to convince them before SPM. Afterall, it’s not just about how promising the career is but also how much I enjoy it as every career path has its pros and cons. Therefore, I aim to pass my foundation studies with a good CGPA and hopefully be able to score a scholarship in degree. At the end of the day, I just want to make my parents proud and prove to them that I know what I’m doing.

I also hope for more new opportunities in 2021. Gaining experience and learning new things is something I always look forward to. As mentioned in the beginning, I became an executive committee in Taylor’s AKPK Club, and got the opportunity to be the emcee for a collaborated webinar. It might be a small achievement for some, but it’s a huge step for me. I’ve also written a couple of articles on Taylor’s College website, something I’ve never thought I would do. It made me become more confident and now I’d like to challenge myself to do more in the new year.

“You know. Life's short. If you don't try new things, you'll never know what you're best at. And you can only make time for new things by quitting the things you know don't work for you.”

― Meg Cabot, Teen Idol.

Besides travelling, I miss the social events, especially attending K-pop concerts. Well, I never understood the craze over K-pop concerts until I attended one in 2019, and now I miss it, A LOT. I was also lucky enough to attend other concerts for free too. They’re fun, and it’s amazing how artists can sing for 2 to 3 hours straight with such powerful vocals, whereas I can’t even speak properly after a karaoke session. But, in my opinion, none can compare to K-pop concerts. It’s literally a party as the atmosphere and energy is ecstatic which can be tiring but unforgettable. I miss the feeling of forgetting about what’s happening in my life and just partying in the moment. I also remember going to cafes to meet my online friends! The last time I met them in person was in March right before MCO, nobody knew what’s coming, we were just happily enjoying each other’s company. I sure hope in 2021, we can all freely be the social animal we’re meant to be again!

Last but not least, it’s to spend more time with my family. You might be wondering, “aren’t you supposed to be spending time with your family already since we’re all at home?” Well, that’s good for you but I’m stuck in the hostel. One of the rules here in line with SOP is no overnights outside the hostel. I spent my free time watching Korean dramas and movies like 18 Again and Wonderful Nightmare. One important thing I learned from them is that blood makes you related, loyalty makes you family. Other than crying like a mess when the characters face challenges, I also reflected on myself and thought a lot about my family. We sometimes take those who are always around us for granted and overlook the little things they do for us, especially our parents.

“Sometimes you will never know the value of a moment until it becomes a memory.”

― Theodor Seuss Geisel.

And that’s all for now! I’m sure there’ll be more to come as I lay down in bed and stare at the ceiling fan before I fall into dreamland. There are a lot of things I want to do but I’ll leave those fantasies for the future when I’m more capable. How about you? Do you have a New Year’s resolution yet? Or do we have the same hopes? Thank you for reading till here, Happy New Year!

Let’s Talk About Consent

Trigger Warning!  This article consists of topics revolving around rape and sexual violence. Please read at your own discretion. Kris Wu, a Chinese pop star and former member of the K-pop band, EXO, sparked debates about sexual consent in China following his recent scandal for allegedly trying to 'deceive young women multiple times into having sexual relations with him — ie. arrested for suspicion of rape.  I’m sure we’re no stranger to many other similar cases with regards to sexual harassment and consent in Malaysia. I gave a lot of thoughts about this issue and hence, I’m here to talk about consent and to raise awareness about the consequences of non-consent . According to Google, consent is defined as ‘permission for something to happen or agreement to do something’ . Consent must be clearly and freely given through communication, either verbally or nonverbally. It’s important as it sets not just your personal boundaries but also your partner’s. Any sexual activity...

From the Eyes of a K-pop Fan: Reasons I Love K-pop

“Why do you like K-pop?” I get this question from people, directly and indirectly, some in a judging way, while some are genuinely curious. While most people would know what K-pop is by now as groups like BTS and Blackpink are greatly known worldwide, I’d still like to give you a brief introduction to K-pop. K-pop started as far back as the 1990s when SeoTaiJi & Boys performed their music on tv. It struck a chord in Korean society and led to the formation of entertainment companies debuting idol groups like H.O.T, Turbo, S.E.S, and solo artists such as BoA and Rain. Some of these artists, which we now refer to as the first generation K-pop artists, are still active in the industry. They served as an inspiration for teenagers in South Korea and led to the debut of second, third, and now the fourth generation of idol groups and solo artists. Music genre, choreography, and fashion also played a big part in the evolution of K-pop. K-pop became popular when addictive hits like No...
