5 Life-Changing Quotes to Inspire You

We’ve all encountered situations that made us feel different emotions in our life, just like the movie ‘Inside Out’, we have feelings such as joy, sadness, disgust, fear, anger, and many more.

While we remind ourselves about the happy moments we’ve had, there are some of us that can’t seem to forget what has hurt us, allowing negativity to slowly eat us. Self-trust and confidence are important, the question is, how?

Comparing myself to when I was going through puberty and coming of age to who I am today, I’m very sure I’ve grown a lot in my attitude and thinking. It’s all more… matured and I owe all my thanks to these 5 quotes.

  1. “Sit with winners. The conversation is different.”

To sit with winners is to surround yourself with people that radiates positivity. Those who lift you up when you’re in a slump, people who can celebrate your success like a fan hyping their idol’s new song, and those who want the best for everyone including themselves. These are great people to be with as they won’t be jealous of your success, put others down for their own interest, or blame external sources when they don’t get what they want. They’re the real winners who work hard for their success and will motivate you to work hard with them.

Exchanging energy is crucial when it comes to any form of relationships. The best part about sitting with winners is that we share our determination and succeed together. However, we must be careful who we exchange it with. I’ve once tried to help someone by giving them positivity, but after some time, I felt drained, as if I’ve lost myself in their dark world. I’m not saying we shouldn’t help those who are in need of positivity, but we should be responsible to keep ourselves safe from toxic and negative energy because energy exchange can affect our health.

  1. “One step back does not mean defeat.

It just means that you will take the same step forward again but wiser.”

by Jossie Estrella

Like ‘Tetris’, we sometimes make mistakes that leave empty spaces in our life. When we reach a point where we don’t know what the next step should be, some of us either give up or start a new game. But what if Tetris allowed us to undo?

When you face problems in life, instead of going with it or giving up, why not slow down, take a step back, and think if there are any alternatives to fix it? According to Bruno Mirchevski, there are 7 things you should do when you face a difficulty:

  1. Observe the situation.

  2. Think of the best and the worst outcomes.

  3. Take some time off.

  4. Retrace your steps until you find where things went wrong.

  5. Summarise the situation into a lesson.

  6. Learn and remember that lesson for the future.

  7. Learn to let go.

  1. “Sometimes the best way to be happy is

to learn to let go of things you tried hard to hold on to

that are no longer good for you.”

Sometimes, we may find it difficult to let go — whether it’s a relationship, a mistake you made, or the bittersweet memories buried in your mind. But you can’t move on to a better future if you keep yourself rooted in the distressing past. If it’s a mistake that made you regret, apologise to the person you’ve hurt and forgive yourself. Everybody makes mistakes and if you don’t forgive yourself you will forever be at fault.

Here’s a list of 30 things you need to let go to find happiness. Perhaps you’ll have a couple of relatable things in it. Always remember that in the end, the only person you can count on is yourself. Your happiness, health, and confidence are in your hands.

  1. “Your perception of yourself affects your vibe.

Love yourself, be confident in who you are,

express your individuality, and let your good vibes flow.”

Perhaps self-confidence is one of the hardest things to obtain. I used to think that I wasn’t good enough, not pretty enough, or not smart enough. I deflect all the compliments people give me as I thought they were just made to please me. But I looked in the mirror one day and realised hey, I’m kinda cute when I smile, I have dimples, and my eyes are pretty too! When I started to embrace my beauty, I became more confident. There’s a Japanese aesthetic called wabi-sabi (侘寂), the acceptance of transience and imperfection. Nobody is perfect in this world, instead of comparing yourself with others, why not look at the beauty you have?

It’s not just about your physical appearance, because we can easily dress up or cover our flaws with makeup, but it’s more important that you see the good in yourself. When you truly love yourself for who you are, then you will be truly loved by others.

  1. “Every cloud has a silver lining.”

Lastly, though this is more of a proverb,  this is something I’ve learned during my primary school’s morning reading session, one that I’ve always kept in mind ever since I understood the meaning of it, that a negative occurrence can have a positive aspect to it.

Sometimes bad things happen for a reason, just like a rainbow after a storm. When things don’t go too well for you, don’t feel hopeless, look at the bright side or think of what you got to learn from it. An example would be a broken friendship, perhaps the friend wasn’t meant to be with you forever but someone who crossed your path to teach you a lesson so that when you encounter a similar or worse situation in the future, you won’t get hurt too much. Afterall, it’s said that lessons in life will be repeated until you learn from your mistakes.

Although quotes are easy to read and remember, it’s equally important for you to make the change after understanding them or else all that I’ve shared with you will be like a passing stranger’s face. I hope you’ll be brave enough to take the step ahead, to let go of things that hold you back, and remember to always love yourself. If you’ve made it this far, I want to tell you that you did well today and I’m proud of you!

Let’s Talk About Consent

Trigger Warning!  This article consists of topics revolving around rape and sexual violence. Please read at your own discretion. Kris Wu, a Chinese pop star and former member of the K-pop band, EXO, sparked debates about sexual consent in China following his recent scandal for allegedly trying to 'deceive young women multiple times into having sexual relations with him — ie. arrested for suspicion of rape.  I’m sure we’re no stranger to many other similar cases with regards to sexual harassment and consent in Malaysia. I gave a lot of thoughts about this issue and hence, I’m here to talk about consent and to raise awareness about the consequences of non-consent . According to Google, consent is defined as ‘permission for something to happen or agreement to do something’ . Consent must be clearly and freely given through communication, either verbally or nonverbally. It’s important as it sets not just your personal boundaries but also your partner’s. Any sexual activity...

From the Eyes of a K-pop Fan: Reasons I Love K-pop

“Why do you like K-pop?” I get this question from people, directly and indirectly, some in a judging way, while some are genuinely curious. While most people would know what K-pop is by now as groups like BTS and Blackpink are greatly known worldwide, I’d still like to give you a brief introduction to K-pop. K-pop started as far back as the 1990s when SeoTaiJi & Boys performed their music on tv. It struck a chord in Korean society and led to the formation of entertainment companies debuting idol groups like H.O.T, Turbo, S.E.S, and solo artists such as BoA and Rain. Some of these artists, which we now refer to as the first generation K-pop artists, are still active in the industry. They served as an inspiration for teenagers in South Korea and led to the debut of second, third, and now the fourth generation of idol groups and solo artists. Music genre, choreography, and fashion also played a big part in the evolution of K-pop. K-pop became popular when addictive hits like No...
